LOOK WHAT GOOD FRIENDS CAN DO!
The photo at the right is of the second floor of the barn "before" the initial clean up began. The Uniontown Community Development Association (UCDA), the non-profit public development authority run by volunteers that was the visionary and implementer of the art center idea, completed the re-construction with private donations, grants from a variety of public and agencies and private foundations, and thousands of volunteered hours. Therefore, there are no mortgage payments on the facility. This enables UCDA to promise the participating artisans the lowest possible rental rates. The operating budget is a "make ends meet" budget, with no profit built in.Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is a 501c3 non profit organization. Donations provide for ongoing support of the facility and its programs through planned giving. Three capital projects still need to be funded: development of the agriculture museum, development of the public parking area and improvement of the outdoor amphitheater.Donations may be made to Artisans at the Dahmen Barn. All donations are tax deductible and donors may specify a specific use for the funds. Donors may mail checks made to Artisans at the Dahmen Barn, to P O Box 36, Uniontown WA 99179. A written receipt will be sent, and donors may be listed on the website at their request.

The Druffel Family
Our Featured Friend this month is plural - members of the Druffel family including Lee, Joanne and Allen, doing business as Bar Star Farm.Lee and Joanne share a UCDA board position and Joanne does double duty as the vice-president of the recently formed Artisan Barn board of directors. Joanne also volunteered her time to enter all the recipes for the cookbook project a couple of years ago, which turned out to be a HUGE job because there were some issues with the publisher's on-line recipe entering program. As a result, Joanne essentially entered each recipe several times. It was a long, frustrating process, but the cookbook turned out well.Lee contributes to the big projects needed at the barn with his farm equipment, making the work efficient. The hillside behind the barn has been destined to become a natural amphitheater, but some grading was needed to create better drainage and the hillside had to be reshaped. Lee made fast work of the grass planting on the bare ground and subsequent weed removal. The new stand of grass will be just right for the big concert planned for August 8 where a concert with several hundred attendees is being held.Allen Druffel, Lee and Joanne's son, recently helped improve the parking area in front of the barn by hauling in a big belly dump truck full of gravel. We love this large scale equipment that gets the job done quickly.Thank you Druffel family.
