Artist statement-
While attending the University of Idaho, in pursuit of a BFA, Tracy took almost every art class offered: ceramics, collage, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, print making, sculpture, and of course, textile surface design. Currently she is focused on fabric and fibers as her primary art medium. Fabric is so accessible and so tangible, and with many of her processes - from batik to free-motion machine quilting - the opportunities for the element of surprise to occur within the finished results are ever-present. It is never boring, she is continually challenging herself to create compositions that are not truly representational but convey feeling and meaning to the viewer.

She says, "We dress ourselves in fabric everyday, we cover ourselves with it at night, we use it to wash and dry ourselves. Fabrics and fibers offer us comfort and protection. Fabric is all around us in our lives and as such, is not always taken seriously as a medium from which fine art is made. Yet, as an art medium, it is endlessly pliable. It may be a 2-dimensional plane or a 3-dimensional form. Dyes and paints may be applied to the surface - stitches may puncture the weave, knit, or felt - layering may produce quilted results when stitched; edges may be finished or left raw. A myriad assortment of techniques may be implemented to embellish the surface. Fabric can be made to be so much more than a mundane "useful object.”

With all of the many techniques and options available, her head is usually swimming with ideas for the next project. If only there were more hours in the day! She loves what she does, and especially loves having a studio at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown, WA. She has been an artist at the Barn from its beginning. She gladly accepts commissions.
